In Memory of Walter H. “Doc” Phillips
On September 17, 2019 the Brunswick Rotary Club, Rotary International, and Harpswell lost a wonderful soul with the death of Walter “Doc” Phillips. Doc was a long time (40+ years) member of Rotary, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a wonderful husband and father, and a true gentleman. His contributions to his various communities and to Rotary are virtually unequalled. He has set the bar high with his dedication and generosity and his passing has left a deep void in all our hearts.
We should all feel strengthened by his example whenever we think of how we can contribute to the greater good of those around us. His lovely wife Joan survives him.
A service was held in his memory at Kellogg Church in Harpswell on October 12, 2019. The following year, the Brunswick Rotary Club created the Walter H. “Doc” Phillips Memorial Award.
General Guidelines: The Brunswick Rotary Club has created an annual Walter “Doc” H. Phillips Memorial Award. There will be a permanent plaque mounted at the Harpswell Town Office Building with places for each awardee’s name to be engraved. Each awardee will receive a momento in recognition of their achievements to be awarded at a Brunswick Rotary meeting. This award will initially be funded by monies given to the Brunswick Rotary Club in Doc’s memory.
Criteria for the Awardee: A community member who has demonstrated dedicated involvement in a field of Doc’s interest. This may include land conservation, volunteerism and service to others, education, water quality, science programs, etc. There is NO restriction that the awardee must be a Rotarian. Each year the President of the Brunswick Rotary Club will set up a committee to search for an appropriate candidate for the award. This award may be made on or around September 20 celebrating the birthday of Doc.
