Update from our Club President Zander Abbott

To my fellow Brunswick Rotary Club members,

As we enter the Labor Day holiday weekend, I wanted to send a warm thanks to each of you for your involvement, membership, and commitment to our club!  It has been a busy August month for Rotary and we have some exciting speakers, service events, and activities scheduled for September.

Last week we were honored to receive an anonymous $1,000 donation to support our community work and service!  These dollars will go directly back into our community and amplify our club's great work.  Thank you to this anonymous donor for their incredibly generosity and support!

We were thrilled to learn earlier this month that our district grant was approved and funded!  This means that our project to purchase a utility trailer and launch a Brunswick home repair team can now become a reality.  Look for more information in the coming months and opportunities to get involved in volunteering for this amazing project.

August was marked with many excellent club presentations during our noontime Monday meeting.  If you haven't been to a meeting in a while, please consider this a personal invitation to join us for lunch, conversations, discussions, and community!  We continue to meet at Martin's Point in their beautiful Community Room located immediately off the main entrance.

A few of my favorite recent talks include club member Fred Horch sharing amazing photos and stories from his time in New Zealand, a fascinating talk by the Southern Maine Astronomers association which included demonstration of the newest technology in personal telescopes, David Patch the president of Maine Veterans in Need who passionately described the work his organization does to support veterans in Maine, and most recently we were honored to have our Rotary District Govenor Bob MacKenzie speak about our district and his passion for service projects to support mental health and community.

Looking ahead to September we have lots to get excited about:
  • Saturday 9/7 - Beach Cleanup volunteer service project - join us at 10am at the Sears Parking Lot to drive to our cleanup in Harpswell
  • Saturday 9/14 - Bring your ideas to the Planning Meeting for our 100th Anniversary - meet up at Wild Oats at 10am to start to plan our celebrations
  • Saturday 9/14 - Help represent our club at the BDA Community BBQ under our Rotary Tent - join us between 11a and 4pm to talk up our club and recruit new members
  • Monday 9/16 - Attend our noontime club meeting to hear Bowdoin President Safa Zaki present to our club
Thank you to our committee chairs, club members, and board members who have been planning events, leading meetings, and volunteering to do anything and everything!  I want to give a particular shout-out to Lisa, Kyle, and Claudia who have all stepped in to lead meetings when I've been out - thanks, team!

I hope to see you at a meeting later this month, around town, or at one of our volunteer events.  Thank you for your involvement with our club!

All the best,
Zander
